Updates on Mid-Year Conference in Las Vegas, April 22-24, 2018

American GI Forum of Texas, Inc. Report: AUSTIN, Texas – The 2018 National Mid-Year Conference originally scheduled to be in Reno Nevada, was moved to Sunday, April 22 thru Tuesday, April 24, 2018 in Las Vegas at Boulder Station 4111 Boulder Hwy, Las Vegas Nevada. The move had very little effect on attendance as it showed good representation of the national membership.

Commander Angel Zuniga called the meeting to order at 9:00 am on Monday Aril 23, 2018. After approval of published agenda, normal opening sessions, welcome, prayer, pledge, reading of the minutes, teasurer's report, general session proceeded. Members in anticipation perhaps of a busy 70th Anniversary Celebration in San Antonio, Texas in July conducted business, joined in on the many working sessions and addressed many of the challenges facing the organization. Clearly, members of the Board are doing what they can to make needed improvements to the National office.

It was a pleasure to notice some new faces attending this important event. California Commander Fredrick Romero brought in a couple of new faces to the National Scene. Mr. Jesse Balderas and Steve Fimbrez both from Fresno, California and Mr. Eddie Ascencion from Southern California. Back after being absent for some time was newly elected Chairwoman Leona Flores and State Treasurer Manuel Lopez both from Michigan. Leona was, and I'm sure will continue to be a very visible member at all National Events. Mr. Lopez is also a long-time member that is welcomed back. New faces from Colorado are Mr. Jacob Fernandez, Vice Commander from the Mile-High Chapter and his wife Diane. Dee Leal Greater Houston Women's Chair and her husband Ernest from the Lucian Adams Forum. Armando Longoria, Austin Chapter Chair and State Sgt-at-Arms was representing Texas in the absence of State Commander John Martinez. Also new State Chairwoman Irene Velasquez from Kansas is a first timer on the National Board. Welcome back to those that have been absent and a hearty welcome to all the new faces, hoping that this is a new trend that will continue in an effort to continue our mission.

There were no oral reports by Board members. All State Commanders and Chairwomen reports were written and presented to the secretary for filing. At the conference we were given updates on the Lawsuits, Our Coalition Partners and the latest on the National Veterans Day Event in Washington D.C. in November.

Several Workshops on Non-profit organizations and also a report on the State of the Organization as well as its mission. Other topics included, amendments to the Constitution, Ethical practices, Fiduciary Duties of Directors, Accountability and transparency, Core Values, Dues, nominations and voting, and the privileges and responsibilities of members.

There was some discussion of the National Office being moved to Texas, but a motion to table for not following procedures ended discussion.

A detailed report was given on the National Conference by Conference co-chairs, Gil & Lupe Rodriguez. included on the report were updates on sponsors, events, guests included 2 receptions, a breakfast three luncheons and Commander's Banquet. Thursday will be dedicated to the AGIF birthplace, Corpus Christi, Texas and on Thursday the day will be dedicated to Carlos Martinez, President and CEO of the NVOP. A complete report on the conference may be read on this website. The latest updates will be posted as they become available.
